The FORERUNNER 170 MUSIC is the affordable top-of-the-range version of the classic model, designed by Garmin. It includes all the running, multisport coaching and health tracking features of the standard Forerunner 170, and adds the ability to stream music directly from the watch — without a phone. It’s aimed at regular runners who refuse to run with their smartphones but don’t want to do without their playlists either.
The Forerunner 170 Music allows you to synchronise your playlists and podcasts from Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music directly to the watch’s memory via Wi-Fi. The result: you go for a run with your Bluetooth headphones and your watch on your wrist — you leave your phone at home. It’s a difference in comfort that really changes the training routine for those who run with music: less weight, less friction, and no more need to worry about the Bluetooth connection on a phone that’s bouncing around in your back or pocket.
In terms of technical specifications, the 170 Music features exactly the same sensors and functions as the standard Forerunner 170: 1.2-inch AMOLED display (390 × 390 px), multi-GNSS GPS, barometric altimeter, compass, thermometer, optical heart rate monitor on the wrist, Garmin Pay and open-water swimming. Same weight of 41 g, same battery life of 10 days in smartwatch mode. The 170 Music also adds two software features: a guided meditation guide and a voice dial mode that announces the time aloud — subtle additions that are consistent with its design for hands-free use.
The question is simple: do we run to music? If so, the price difference is one of the easiest to justify on the market — most competitors offering in-car streaming charge a much higher premium. If the answer is no, the standard FR170 covers exactly the same training ground.
As for the coaching, the 170 Music features the same full set: Garmin Coach Running and Cycling with adaptive training plans, Quick Workouts, Training Readiness, HRV Status, Training Status, Training Load, Load Ratio, Training Load Focus, wrist-based running power, daily training suggestions, and compatibility with cycle power sensors. The sports profiles cover more than 80 activities, including open-water swimming.
The running watch for runners who have their earphones firmly in their ears right from the first kilometre!
