The FORERUNNER 70 is a GPS running watch designed by Garmin, the world leader in sports watches. It is aimed at beginner or intermediate runners who want a lightweight, easy-to-read watch that can intelligently track their progress — without the advanced features that only triathletes and seasoned runners actually use.
Weighing in at 40 g on the scales, the Forerunner 70 is barely noticeable on your wrist — whether you’re out for a 5 km run on a Tuesday evening or a half-marathon on a Sunday morning. The 1.2-inch AMOLED screen (390 × 390 px) offers significantly better readability than the range’s previous MIP screens: race data remains legible in direct sunlight without the need for forced backlighting. Hybrid touchscreen and 5 physical buttons – which is essential for operating the device whilst wearing gloves or with wet hands. The multi-GNSS GPS ensures reliable positioning even in urban areas or under cover, and the 13-day battery life in smartwatch mode (23 hours in high-precision GPS mode across all systems) exceeds that of the Forerunner 165 by an hour and a half in this respect.
The wrist-based power output — previously reserved for top-of-the-range models as a real-time effort indicator — is now available on the FR70. Combined with HRV (heart rate variability) monitoring and the Training Readiness score, the watch provides a daily assessment of your actual ability to train — taking into account the quality of your night’s sleep, recent training load and stress levels.
Expert’s advice: For runners starting out with Garmin Coach, activate the Run/Walk plan from the very first week — the programme incorporates walking phases calculated based on your actual fitness level and adjusts the training volume for each weekly cycle.
The FORERUNNER 70 features two complementary coaching tools. Quick Workouts allow you to create a structured workout in just a few seconds simply by entering your desired duration and intensity level. For longer-term projects (5 km, 10 km, half-marathon or marathon), the Garmin Coach plans are adjusted daily to reflect your current fitness level. The Garmin Run Coach programme, meanwhile, offers low-volume run/walk plans for complete beginners or those returning to running.
The daily training suggestions round off the package: every morning, the watch suggests a session tailored to your recovery, your accumulated training load and your resting heart rate — without you having to decide for yourself whether it’s the right day for interval training. For a runner who trains three times a week without a coach, this is effectively what replaces the intuition that takes years to develop.
A watch that does the thinking for you, so all you have to do is run!
